Overview
Lilt is built by Strange Magic Apps. We respect your privacy and have designed Lilt to keep your data on your device.
What Lilt never collects
By default Lilt makes no network requests, contains no analytics SDKs, and sends nothing — not anonymised, not aggregated — about you, your scripts, your recordings, or your device. Specifically, Lilt does not collect:
- Your scripts, or any text you type into the editor
- Your recordings, or any audio captured during a session
- The transcript that the on-device speech recogniser produces
- Your name, email address, location, IP address, device model, operating-system version, or app version
- Any identifier — anonymous or otherwise — that could be used to link one session to another
There is no account system. There is no sign-in.
Permission requests
In order for Lilt to work, it needs to access your device’s camera and microphone. We ask for these permissions when you first launch the app.
- Camera is used to capture your voice recordings, as well as to show you a preview of what you’re recording.
- Microphone is used to transcribe your voice recordings and save them to your device. It is also used to pass your voice to the speech recognition engine.
- Speech recognition is used to identify your position in a script and to automatically scroll through it. Apple’s built-in message in this request suggests that your voice may be sent to their servers. This is something that is not in Lilt’s control, but we only use services that keep your voice on your device.
In addition, exporting your recordings to Photos requires access to your Photos library. Lilt does not request access to your Photos library on launch. It is requested only the first time you tap Save to Photos on a take.
We only ask for add-only access. Lilt can add new videos to your library but cannot read or browse any photos or videos already in it.
What stays on your device
- Scripts are stored locally in SwiftData. They are not synced to any server and are not visible to Strange Magic.
- Recorded takes are saved into the app’s own sandbox storage. They leave your device only if you explicitly export them to Photos, or share them yourself.
- Speech recognition runs entirely on-device through Apple’s built-in speech framework. There is no server fallback.
Third-party services
Lilt uses no third-party services. It relies only on Apple frameworks that run on-device.
Some third-party open source libraries are used to provide some functionality. These are bundled into the app and audited to ensure they have no tracking, analytics, or access to your data.
In-app purchases
In-app purchases are handled entirely through the Apple App Store using StoreKit. Apple processes the transaction, collects any payment information, and confirms entitlement directly with your device.
Strange Magic Apps does not see your payment details, your Apple ID, your billing address, or any personally identifying information about you as a purchaser. We receive only aggregate, anonymised sales reports from Apple, which cannot be linked back to an individual customer.
Backups
Lilt does not automatically back up your data. You can manually export your takes to Photos, or use iCloud to back up your whole device.
Data deletion
All of Lilt’s data lives on your device. Deleting the app removes its scripts and any takes still held in its sandbox storage. Takes you have already exported to Photos remain there until you delete them yourself.
